The Game

The Ice Owls were formed in 1972 with the sole purpose of providing a recreational outlet for the visually impaired, in the form of ice hockey. During the early years the game was played as a non contact style. But as the players improved and new teams were formed, the style changed to the current form we play. Today the Ice Owls play a very disciplined style of recreational semi-non contact hockey which was developed to suit the desires of the visually impaired players who wanted to bring their game as close as possible to the game their sighted competitors play.

The Puck

The puck is approximately 6 inches in diameter and rattles when in motion. It is made from a hollow plastic wheel which is filled with several metal pieces.

Rules

The only rule changes the Ice Owls play under are as follows:

-No Slap Shots
-Shots must stay below 3ft from the ice-The visually impaired skater is allowed an 18" grace on offside and on offside passes
-Putting the stick on the puck is considered unsportsman-like conduct since this does not permit the puck to rattle
-all high sticking calls are called for five minute majors.

All other rules played by are those of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. The Ice Owls are members of the Ontario Hockey Association and follow rules under their guidance.
